Galt Police Officer Killed in the Line of Duty

On behalf of the El Monte Police Department, our hearts are with the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Kevin Tonn who was killed in the line of duty:

Galt, CA: On Tuesday, January 15th, 2013 at approximately 1130 hours, a burglary was reported in the 200 block of F Street in the City of Galt, CA. By the time officers arrived on scene, the suspect was gone and a man was seen walking along a nearby railroad tracks. Officer Kevin Tonn contacted the male subject and a physical struggle ensued. The suspect, 30-year old Humphrey Gascon II, drew a handgun and shot Officer Tonn. As the second officer arrived on scene, Gascon fired several more times before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life. Officer Tonn was transported to an area hospital and died of his injury. Officer Tonn was 35 years old and a 3 1/2 year veteran of the Galt Police Department assigned as a K9 handler. Officer Tonn served in the U.S. Army and worked as a firefighter and paramedic in New York before joining the police department in 2009.
